About Serumpun Living

Malaysia, told with care.

An independent magazine on the style, travel, food, culture and everyday living of Malaysia, rooted on the East Coast and written for readers everywhere.

Our Mission

A Magazine for the Long Way Home

Selamat datang. Serumpun Living is an independent, English-language magazine about Malaysia, with its roots on the East Coast in Terengganu. We write for international readers: the first-time visitor planning a route beyond Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian living abroad who misses breakfast at home, and the curious traveller who would rather understand a place properly before arriving.

The word serumpun means “of the same stem”: kin who grow from a shared root. It is the spirit of the magazine. Malaysia is many communities, many languages and many kitchens, and its best stories are often found where those traditions meet: at a batik table, a morning market, a timber mosque or a departure gate.

Our aim is simple. We want to be the magazine you would happily read on a long flight: thoughtful, unhurried, beautifully illustrated and genuinely useful once you land.

Inspire

Showing the beauty in places, dishes and traditions that are easy to take for granted.

Inform

Practical, carefully checked guidance that helps readers plan, book and travel with confidence.

Celebrate

The weavers, cooks, fishermen, artisans and families who give Malaysia its character.

Craft at the Centre

Made by Hand, Written with Patience

Much of what we cover begins with a maker. Batik is drawn line by line in hot wax before it ever meets a dye bath; songket is woven thread by thread with gold and silver yarn. We try to bring the same patience to our pages: fewer stories, researched properly, and told in a way that respects the people and places behind them.

That is why you will find long-form guides here rather than quick lists, and why we would rather publish one story we can stand behind than ten we cannot.

Who We Are

A Small Independent Editorial Team

Serumpun Living is produced by a small independent editorial team. We do not run personal profiles or chase bylines; the spotlight belongs to the places, makers and flavours we write about.

We write in English for an international audience, and we keep a light hand with Malay words, explaining them where they first appear. Partnerships are welcome, but sponsored content is always clearly labelled, and we decline anything that does not suit our readers.

Fewer stories, researched properly, and told with respect for the people and places behind them.
